Integração com a graduação
Regarding the integration of graduate and undergraduate programs, it is important to observe that, according to Article 51 of the General Postgraduate Regulations of Ufes (Resolution No. 11/2010 of Cepe), all faculty members of the University who work in graduate programs must also participate in undergraduate teaching, giving lectures in courses under the responsibility of the Department to which they are assigned.
The faculty members of the PPGHis have distinguished themselves in supervising students in Scientific Initiation through the Institutional Program of Scientific Initiation (Piic) at Ufes. The Piic/Ufes is a program aimed at introducing undergraduate students to research (cf. CNPq, RN-25/2005, of 11/04/2005). Its main objective is to encourage the scientific careers of undergraduate students who show good academic performance, preparing them for graduate studies. To this end, these students actively participate in research projects with recognized academic quality, scientific merit, and appropriate supervision, in an individual and ongoing manner. The management of Piic is handled by the Institutional Committee for Scientific Initiation (CIIC) at Ufes, which was created by Resolution 35/2001 of the Council for Teaching, Research, and Extension.
The Piic at Ufes is divided into two subprograms: the Institutional Program for Scientific Initiation Scholarships (Pibic) and the Institutional Voluntary Scientific Initiation Program (Pivic). Pibic includes students involved in scientific initiation who receive scholarships provided by the institution or external funding agencies (CNPq and Fapes). Pivic includes students involved in scientific initiation who do not receive scholarships. Pivic differs from Pibic only in that it is a program without scholarship payments for students, but it provides a number of study scholarships each semester at the Ufes Language Center. In addition, this center offers training for students to obtain certification in various foreign languages, such as TOEFL and similar exams. The Office of the Vice Rector for Research and Graduate Studies (PRPPG) accepts requests for funding academic travel within the country for both Pibic and Pivic students, within its budgetary limits. Regarding mentors and undergraduate students, the objectives and rules of Pivic are identical to those of Pibic. The PRPPG informs faculty and undergraduate students about the requirements for selecting Pibic scholarship recipients and Pivic volunteers through public notices.
In the specific case of PPGHis, the combination of Pibic/Pivic has enabled professors to supervise expanded teams in Scientific Initiation with institutional endorsement, optimizing the work of the faculty-researcher and allowing them to train a larger group of students interested in pursuing a Master's degree. In 2019, 67 scientific initiation subprojects were supervised. An important outcome of the investment made in Scientific Initiation has been the considerable increase in the participation of these students in national conferences and the increase in the number of former Scientific Initiation students among those approved in the Program’s selection process. Students from the Scientific Initiation program thus have the opportunity to continue their intellectual development acquired during their undergraduate studies with excellent medium-term results.
Teacher Internship:
Another relevant activity regarding the exchange between undergraduate and graduate programs is the Teaching Internship, which has been undertaken by both scholarship recipients and non-scholarship students. The involvement of PPGHis students in undergraduate courses has provided an excellent opportunity for interaction between students at different academic levels, helping to reinforce, within the undergraduate program, the perception of the University as a center of knowledge production and not merely as a place of knowledge reproduction.
