Summary: This dissertation has the purpose of presenting reflections about the comprehensiveness of State x Society role in what concerns the use and the control of information produced and accumulated institutionally. During the period of the military dictatorship, the State practiced a huge repression through censorship, vigilance and fear; obtaining coercion by part of the society. The archives, understood as agents of the State power, become places of memory and resource for historical investigation. Through the collection of the Political and Social Order of the State of Espirito Santo - DOPS / ES, a specific part of this documentary production is pointed out in this paper: the photographs, still questioned as an instrument in the field of History. We also approach the student movement group, one of the main targets of the military regime. Through the historical-semiotic methodology, which understands photography as a product, the signs in the images that characterize its social contexts of production have been identified; the main lines of action by DOPS / ES; and the elements that construct a discourse about those considered subversive.
