Summary: The purpose of this work is to carry out research on Jesuit activity in Campos dos Goytacazes, a region located in the then captaincy of São Tomé, later Paraíba do Sul. The analysis focuses on the period between the effective installation of the headquarters of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição farm and Saint Ignatius, in 1692, and 1762, the year in which the Devassa was sent resulting from the Papal Brief that established the reform of the Society of Jesus to the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, General Reformer of the Jesuit Religion. Methodologically using regional history, micro-history and comparative history, the aim is to investigate the testimonies of alleged “crimes” committed by the priests and brothers of the Order, as well as the modus operandi of the religious in territorial disputes, which is why we believe that the Jesuits decided to settle in the region in the final years of the 17th century. In short, we seek to confirm the hypothesis that the dispute over land and its subsequent expansion were linked to the transformation of sacred influence into political and economic power, capable of guaranteeing benefits and resolving disputes in favor of the Ignatians throughout the first half of the XVIII century.
