Summary: Studies on anti-slavery laws, the press, and the circulation of ideas have gained greater relevance in Brazilian historiography in recent years and have become a central object of research that privileges newspapers as a source. Espírito Santo, during the 19th century, offers interesting material for discussion on the subject, as its territory was permeated by various newspapers that highlighted the laws. Based on these newspapers, the objective was to analyze the impact that the anti-slavery laws, promulgated by the Empire, had on the political language of the Capixaba press. These laws include the Lei Eusébio de Queirós (1850), Lei do Ventre Livre (1871), Lei do Sexagenário (1885), and finally, the Lei Áurea (1888). The newspapers published by the press of the capital Vitória and the regions of Itapemirim and Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, in the south of the province, were explored. This region experienced economic growth due to coffee production and surpassed the capital in terms of the number of slaves. The methodology of the studies of political languages allowed us to identify the implications of the laws as a central element in the journalistic discourses of Espírito Santo. The work inserted the state into the debate on the subject and confirmed the influence of the laws on the rhetoric of the newspapers, which in their own way reverberated significantly.
