Summary: The official creation of the Santa Isabel colony is commonly established as the year 1847, considered the landmark of the occupation of European immigrants in the region where the municipality of Domingos Martins is located today. This date was adopted by part of the local population, the media and the municipal government. The idea that the region was only populated after the arrival of the first immigrants from Europe denies the historical presence of the native peoples and other Brazilians who lived there at the time. Therefore, the recent tourist development is praised under a pseudo-European heritage of culinary, architectural and cultural aspects that obliterates the contribution of other ethnicities and populations resident even before the establishment of the immigrant colony, from the mid-19th century. Our research uses as primary sources the books of the Police Fund of the Public Archive of the State of Espírito Santo and the Catholic Church, in which we highlight baptisms and deaths. We ordered the material according to the onomastic method, which consists of overlapping data related to names. We tabulated the data through quantitative analysis and by cross-referencing first and last names. Furthermore, our activity is based on the methodologies of evidentiary paradigm and scale reduction, respectively, of researchers Carlo Ginzburg and Jacques Revel, which allowed us to identify individuals, helping to create a quantitative and later qualitative analysis of the data gathered for this study. Finally, our hypothesis argues that there were nationals - indigenous, white, black and mixed race (free, enslaved or freed) - along the São Pedro de Alcântara Royal Road, since 1814, and that the municipality of Domingos Martins emerged in its surroundings. This conclusion reveals that the arrival and presence of Europeans and their descendants was not exclusive to the municipality, not even in the first decades of its official existence. It is noted, then, that the strength of the historical narrative and the resignified traditions of foreign immigrants made it impossible to value and remember the nationals, who were their predecessors or contemporaries.
