Summary: The violence against women was gaining prominence in Brazil with the second wave of the feminist movement from the 1970s, contributing to the creation of public policies directed to its combat. The establishment of the Specialized Police Station in Care for Women (DEAM) in Brazil was one of the results of confronting gender violence in the last century. From then on, many victims began registering a police report against their attackers with the aim of putting an end to the situation. Even so, the numbers of aggression against women throughout the national territory are alarming, particularly in the state of Espírito Santo, more specifically the city of Vitória. Only in 2016, there were 717 occurrences recorded in DEAM, and in 35 of these, it was observed that jealousy is described as the factor that motivated the violence. Then, 13 police reports were selected to be studied through a qualitative analysis. In most the police reports, women claimed the aggressions and constant disagreements were because of the author's jealousy or because he didn’t accept the end of the love relationship. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate this jealousy is deeply associated with the feeling of men's possession of women, which was culturally built by patriarchy throughout the history of humanity. The analysis of the police reports allows us to understand how gender identity standards, which were made up of a man-dominated society, cross the affective and loving relationships, causing and legitimizing the perpetuation of gender violence.
