Summary: This dissertation analyzes Blissful Agony, the inaugural novel by journalist Amylton de Almeida, printed at the presses of the newspaper O Diário in 1972. Narrated in the third person, in a single paragraph, it represents the space of Vitoria´s city where an omniscient narrator describes the protagonist's stream of consciousness through the use of repetitions in different syntactic positions, similar to the continuous present developed by Gertrude Stein, indicating the dissolution of chronological time and the psychological and introspective character of the narrator, who is secluded in his thoughts. The metropolization of the Espírito Santo´s capital is narrated from the perspective of a character stagnated in an anguishing and oppressive present. Subsumed to the condition of a modern man, he observes the geographical and social transformations with disgust and distrust, and his recollection of the past translates the new experience in the de-characterized territory. Utilizing the melancholy present in the lyrics of the French poet Charles Baudelaire and reactivated by Walter Benjamin in his allegorical reading of modernity, the aim is to highlight the melancholy to achieve an allegorical understanding of Blissful Agony, understood as a literary fragment capable of revealing aspects of the historical past of Espírito Santo. Through the use of Benjaminian literary montage method, the contradictory dimension of military modernization in Espírito Santo is able to be revealed in the mobilization of Amylton’s novel, taken as a medium of reflection in the knowable present.
