Summary: This research aims to investigate the institutional gender violence practiced by the Brazilian military state against students and political activists at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) between 1971 and 1973, the height of the dictatorship's repression against the so-called subversion. In this offensive, public universities were represented by state agents as wombs of communist ideas and practices contrary to morality, which justified, in military eyes, extrapolating the limits of their legitimate attributions and committing priceless violations against the rights of men and women . University women who risked the fight against the dictatorial order were given the even more copious weight of torture undertaken by state agents mostly men, it is worth mentioning , as they violated the political order and, in addition, the order of gender and sexuality sedimented by patriarchy. To understand the specific character of rape against women, this research seeks elements in the historical course of patriarchal ideology in Brazil and uses the category institutional gender violence, understanding that the systematization of torture by the military State was anchored in the manipulation of patriarchal definitions of femininity and masculinity. As a theoretical foundation, the dialogue between Cultural History and New Political History is proposed in order to understand how patriarchal gender representations produced an imaginary that provided meaning to actions, behaviors, discourses and political devices shared by the military, which had intention to control women's bodies, behaviors and social roles. Finally, the methodological foundation of the research lies in the Analysis of Content, in its direction for the treatment of documentary sources based on the predominant subjectivity in qualitative reports, like memory.
