Summary: This paper proposes to analyze the relationship between gender violence and the erasure of memory of murdered women, using the concept of gender memoricide. Although the idea of such a conceptualization appears implied in literature that deals with gender relationships, its nomenclature hasn’t been directly or specifically found or cited yet. This research is based on the analysis of seven cases of murdered women that occurred between 2001 and 2005 in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, a municipality in the state of Espírito Santo, in order to identify the institutional mechanisms that contribute to the production of forgetfulness of these victims. Through a research to the judicial and police files, the study of the cases made possible to observe that the justice system sustains the impunity through investigative negligence, revictimization, exposing the victim (in the case the woman) again to the suffering, and the gender violence normalization rooted in the speeches and patriarchal representations in the judiciary level, reproducing new institutional violences. This study too presents a structured diagram that evidences a continuous gender violence cycle, in order to emphasize how the patriarchal speech, based on justice system, contributes to the erasure of these crimes of collective and historic memory of society. Therefore, this study aims to demonstrate, how gender memoricide, that is, the total erasure of the crime memories, victims and gender violence in general, is configured as a phenomenon that reinforces the victims’ exclusion and invisibility, in a way to perpetuate even more the violence against women.
