Summary: In the final quarter of the 19th century, thousands of italian immigrants arrived in the province of Espírito Santo, fleeing the precarious conditions of their homeland and in search of a better life. Most of them were installed on lands bathed by the Benevente river, in Rio Novo Colony and later in Castello Colony, regions of the current county of Alfredo Chaves. These people faced the difficult task of relearning how to live in a completely unknown place, where they built a community and developed their culture. The objective of this research is to identify the culture transmitted by italian immigrants to their descendants in Alfredo Chaves, with a focus on leisure: games such as mora, boccia, cards and entertainment during religious and community festivals. The main argument of the dissertation is that leisure has the role of sociability among the descendants of italians immigrants in Alfredo Chaves, being the stage for social meetings, where people talk about the most varied topics, interact, have fun, build and maintain friendships, etc. As a theorical basis, the concepts of culture, memory, identity and habitus are used, in order to understand how the sociocultural relations of this group of people are processed. To achieve these objectives, I use OralHistory and the ethnographic method of participant observation, through interviews and contacts with descendants of italian immigrants.
