Summary: The research aims to understand how female access to schooling occurred in the Province of Espírito Santo between 1845, when the first school for girls appeared in the provincial capital, and the year 1889, when a new phase in Brazilian history began - the republican era. To this end, the reasons why Brazilian society made access to education for women difficult are evident. It is also noteworthy because, from the nineteenth century, a slow and gradual change has begun in relation to women's access to education, mainly due to the dynamism of the economy of the country and the Province of Espírito Santo, as a consequence of the growth of coffee production, the beginning of greater urbanization and the emergence of industrialization. It focuses on the influence of a vision in effervescence in Europe since the end of the eighteenth century, with the effectuation of the process of schooling to civilize the populations in the national states to become more developed. From the 19th century on, in Brazil, the discourse in favor of education and, in particular, women's access to education, grew, since they were responsible for the education of future generations. Slowly, in the course of the 19th century, the need to expand the provision of schooling was consolidated among government authorities. Therefore, the number of schools, teachers and students slowly increased, until, at the end of the 20th century, the primary magisterium in the Holy Spirit had already become feminized. To understand the proposed object of study, it is necessary to relate it to other issues, such as the political and economic structure of the province and the perception of government authorities on the role of education, since the decisions of the provincial presidents on women’s education obviously took into account the social representations relating to the position of women in public life. The documentary corpus is studied from the perspective of content analysis and with a theoretical foundation based on issues of gender, power and social representation, using, for this purpose, the reports of the provincial president, local periodicals and correspondence from the Education Fund of the Espírito Santo State Public Archive. It is concluded that female education, during the years studied, reduced the stigma of the reclusive woman and, although at a slow pace, contributed to the reduction of social exclusion of women in the Province of Espírito Santo, guaranteeing her place in the external world.
